One significant area within the Missouri River
Region is historic St. Charles, Missouri. When visiting the region
you will certainly not want to miss a visit to St. Charles. Main
Street. St. Charles has for quite some time been the center of much
hustle and bustle and commercial enterprise.
Main Street is comprised of thirteen blocks of unique shops and
eateries and runs from Boone's Lick Road to Clark. The street is
quite quaint and charming and suggestive of a by-gone era in the
way of its construction of red brick(s). Accordingly you may enjoy
a glass of wine and then stop in and browse at one of many shops
offering antiquities.
Historically, St. Charles was the state's first capitol during the
early portion of the nineteenth century. This occurred while a more
permanent capitol was in the planning stages at Jefferson City. The
former state capitol building was constructed in the Federal style
and renovated between the years of 1961 and 1971.
Nearby, Defiance is the location where the legendary Daniel Boone
built his residence. Boone was known for his reliability as a fur
trader and considered a good and honest man. Boone is subject of
many of St. Charles' legends. For example, Boone claimed he could
shoot a tick off the hind-end of any animal without causing it any
injury or worse. No one ever questioned Boone's boasting since
Boone was known throughout the area as quite the marksman.
In order to experience the life of the Boone family, you will want
to visit the Boone Home and Boonesfield Village. The Boone Home was
constructed by the famous fur trader and his son (Nathan) in
1799.
